Overall:
South Africa is very accessible, there's lots to do, the animals are incredible, and the food is good (in Cape Town).
Activities:
Safari is a must-do. Table Mountain and the Cape of Good Hope are scenic and fun. The "historical" tours are ok, if you like that sort of thing. And they have penguins!
Challenge:
English is widely spoken. Afrikaans sounds goofy. If you're uncomfortable with poverty, skip the tour. Otherwise, it's very challenge-free.
Food:
Cape Town has great food for great prices. If Kruger had better choices, this could have been a 5-star food rating. If you stick just to Cape Town, you'll miss half the fun, but you'll eat like a king. Try the warthog, and don't forget the ostrich, kudu, elephant and beef varieties of biltong.
Lodging:
Nice hotels in Cape Town, and Kruger bungalows are not "roughing it" at all.
Fun:
SA is a ton of fun. Driving on the left is kooky. Safari is awesome. Cape of Good Hope is wild.
